Working With Images
Preparing Images for Use on Your Site
Before you can use an image on your page you must upload it to a folder within WebMedley. Prior to uploading an image, use an image editor to make the following adjustments: (If you need an image editor you can download a free one called Irfanview from our resources page.)
1.) Keep the width of the image at approximately 300 pixels wide or less. This ensures that the image won't be too wide to display on your visitor's display.
2.) Set the resolution of the image to 72 dpi (dots per inch). Higher resolutions will not appear any more detailed on a computer's display but will increase the time it takes to download and become visible to a visitor.
3.) Save the image as a .jpg or .gif file. These are standard file types for internet use. Generally, .jpg works best for images and .gif works best for clip art.
4.) Make sure the file name doesn't contain any of the following characters, which will cause errors during upload or as you insert the image on the page: / ? < > \ : * | " ' ^
To add an image to your page you must first upload it. There are two ways to do this: Use the file manager (particularly when uploading multiple images) or upload "as you go" when inserting a new image.
Adding Images to Your Media Folder Using File Manager:
On the navigation bar, click on the "Admin" link

and select File Manager. This will open the File Manager window:

1.) To create a new folder, enter a name for the folder in the box in the upper left hand corner of the file manager and click the folder with the Green down arrow button.

2.) In the task bar at the top of the File Manager, click on Upload. This will open the uploading window.

3.) Click on the browse button to search for image files stored on your computer. Double click on the name or the image you wish to upload and click "Add" to the right of the Browse field.

4.) The name of the file will "jump" to the box below. You can upload multiple files by browsing and adding. The upload box will expand as you add files to it.
5.) When you have finished adding files, click "upload new file" in the botton right-hand corner. The files will upload and you will be returned to the File Manager window. Your files will be visible in the list on this page.

(Note that the default number of file names displayed per page is 10. You can change this setting in the bottom right hand corner of the File Manager window, or use the forward and backward buttons to move through the list of uploaded files.)

6.) Your files are now ready for use.
Uploading Images "As You Go"
If you want to upload images one-by-one as you work on your site, you may do so. Be aware, however, that images uploaded using this method will be saved in the default folder in the File Manager, rather than in folders you specify. If you have just a few images, this will not be a problem, but should you wish to organize multiple image files you'll need to use the Admin->File Manager->Upload function to create and manage folders and the image files they contain.
Uploading and adding a single image to your page:

2.) Click the "Insert/edit image" button.

Adding an image to a Text/HTML Module
Most of the time, you'll want to use images alongside text in a Text/HTML module.
1.) To insert an image, click on the "Insert/edit image" button:
This will open the Image Properties window:

2.) Fill in alternative text describing the image. This will help people who can't view images on their computer, or for the visually impaired who use special software to read the content of web pages to them.
3.) If desired, you may alter the image size using the width and height fields. This will adjust the image size (not the file size) proportionately, i.e., as you change the width, the height will change as well to keep the image from distorting. Keep in mind, however, that it is best to resize images before you upload them, and use the image adjustment feature only to make small changes to image sizes.
4.) Add a border if desired. A border gives a nice, "finished" look to your images. Border widths begin at 0 for none and increase from 1 .
5.) If desired, enter values for the horizontal and vertical spacing - these are the offsets from the top and left margins and controls the space between the image and any text that surrounds it.
6.) Alignment will assign text wrapping based on location of the image. If the image is aligned to the left, text will appear and wrap to the right of the image; if the image is aligned to the right, the text will appear and wrap to the left.
